We are excited to be making our first film with Chris Forsey RI this week to be called Beyond Watercolour. Chris is a highly talented artist who believes that pure watercolour can be enhanced by the addition of other painting media such as acrylic and pastel. He's a brilliant communicator and an experienced teacher and demonstrator. I'm looking forward to filming his very different approach to watercolour and I hope the DVD will be released in early April.

Next year gets off to an exciting start with a number of new releases already in the pipeline. In January we will be releasing Brian Ryder's New DVD Winter Landscapes in Oil.

Early next year will also see our second film with the amazing Jean Haines SWA. Her last DVD for us, Amazing Ways With Watercolour, has been a best seller and her army of fans around the world have clamoured for a second release which will be out in early spring.

We are thrilled to be working with a new artist Chris Forsey RI who will be showing how to produce incredible watercolours which go beyond the boundaries of traditional watercolour painting. Chris is a very exciting artist and a member of the Royal Institute Of Painters In Watercolour. Look out for this title in April.

Spring will also see the release of our third DVD with ROI President Peter Wileman. In response to many request from our customers around the world, it will concentrate on Peter's abstract oil landscapes which are a luscious feast of colour and tone.

New Brian Ryder DVD Out In January

We have just finished filming with Brian Ryder for our first release of 2012 - Winter Landscapes in Oils. Brian is a devoted plein air painter and is keen to encourage all painters to tackle winter landscapes with their sparkling light and special atmosphere.

Brian painted in some lovely locations just a few miles from his home in Wells Next The Sea in Norfolk. The weather only defeated him once - a picture we see him finishing off in the studio. The cold weather meant that Brian completed each picture in no more than and hour and a half and its fascinating to see just what can be achieved in a short space of time with heightened observation.

Step By Sep Watercolour Demonstration from Robert Brindley

The execellent Robert Brindley RSMA has supplied us with a very usefull stage by stage watercolour demonstration showing his wonderful atmopsheric technique. I hope you enjoy it.

SMOKE AND LIGHT / WHITBY HARBOUR - WATERCOLOUR STEP BY STEP DEMONSTRATION

This painting was inspired by an atmospheric winter morning overlooking Whitby harbour. The reference material was 'cropped' fairly dramatically, to produce a cameo scene which I felt captured the light and atmosphere more successfully.

MATERIALS:

Paper - Arches 300lb rough

Colours - Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Magenta, Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue.

Masking Fluid

STEP ONE

The image was drawn out fairly accurately, using a 2B pencil. Masking fluid was applied to the main highlights and also to 'mid tone' areas which are surrounded by 'darks'.

STEP TWO

The following washes were applied to damp paper:

Raw Sienna, Cobalt Blue, Cobalt Violet for the sky and distance, which merge seamlessly together. Cerulean, Cobalt Violet, Raw Sienna plus Cobalt Violet and Cobalt Blue plus Permanent Magenta were introduced for the water and 'mid distant' harbour structures. Cerulean plus Cobalt Violet, Raw Sienna plus Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Blue plus Burnt Sienna, Cobalt Blue plus Permanent Magenta and two mixes of Ultramarine Blue plus Burnt Sienna (a 'warm' and 'cool' version) were used for the harbour wall and its dark reflections, the roadway and the buildings on the right hand side.

The paper was then allowed to completely dry.

STEP THREE

The masking fluid was removed from the distance and also the lighter areas in the water using light pressure and a clean finger. The paper should be completely dry.

Mixes of Cobalt Blue plus Permanent Magenta, Cobalt Blue plus Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Blue plus Burnt Sienna were then introduced, 'wet into wet' on dry paper, to increase the darks on the bridge.

STEP FOUR

The remaining masking fluid was removed and the following colours introduced to the buildings on the right hand side:

Cobalt Blue plus Permanent Magenta, Cobalt Blue plus Burnt Sienna and two mixes of Ultramarine Blue plus Burnt Sienna (a 'warm' and 'cool' version).

STEP FIVE

The lower section of the roadway was tinted with 'wet in wet', pale washes of Raw Sienna, Cobalt Violet and Cerulean.

Details such as lighting columns, handrails, figures etc were painted. Some of the sharp edges and 'pure' whites, which resulted from using masking fluid, were softened using washes of Cobalt Violet and Raw Sienna.

Finally, to add atmosphere, smoke was carefully lifted out using a damp brush and kitchen towel.

Jean Haines Elected To Full Membership Of The Society For Floral Painters

Jean has been selected as a full member of the SFP, The Society for Floral Painters. Her first style of painting was botanical and illustrative which led her, sahe says, to how she paints today in watercolour. Jean commented: "I adore painting flowers so I am delighted to have been offered full membership to showcase my floral work in future SFP exhibitions."

New Jean Haines Exhibition

A vibrant new collection of watercolours by Jean Haines SWA will be on show at the Frame Gallery in Odiham, Hampshire.

Subjects include many favourites including Jean's popular horse racing scenes and vibrantly alive Autumnal paintings. The exhibition runs until November 18.

Our next release is sure to please all you line and wash fans. Next month (November) we release our third firm with the brilliant Devon-based watercolourist John Hoar. It's called Line, Wash and Watercolour and shows John painting four half imperial pieces. We couldn't call it pen and wash as John doesn't strictly use a pen. Instead he uses a matchstick stuck into the end of a short length of garden cane and held firm with a couple of panel pins. Have a look:

And with that, John works his magic to turn out pictures like these.

How many shades of "muck" can you spot? John has also written an article for The Artist Maqazine based on the content of this DVD and it is due to be published in the February 2012 edition whcih will be out mid January. ROI President Peter Wileman has kindly sent me some of his latest pictures from his painting trip to Devon. Some cracking work Peter! His next one man show is to be in Harrogate in Yorkshire next month. Details to follow shortly.

And finally here's a picture of Peter's beloved Chevrolet that he drove down to Devon in with some of his pictures being unloaded. Peter tells me he will have to sell a few of them just to pay for the petrol. It achieves just 10 miles to the gallon!

Robert Brindley To Take Part In Pure Watercolour Society Exhibition

Robert been invited to take part in 'The Pure Watercolour Society' Exhibition at Windrush which previews on Saturday 8th October 2011, 5-30 - 8pm and runs from Sunday the 9th to Saturday 22nd of October.

The Society was formed by James Fletcher Watson in 1999 and David Curtis is now its Patron.

The Pure Watercolour Society is a small and informal society for painters in watercolour who enjoy using the medium in pure transparent washed allied to fine draftsmanship in the method exemplified by the 19th century masters, such as John Sell Cotman, Richard Parkes Bonington, David Cox, Thomas Girtin and J.M.W. Turner, and as followed in the 20th century by, among others, Edward Seago, Edward Wesson, Leonard Squirrell, Charles Knight and James Fletcher-Watson.

The PWS was founded in 1999 with James Fletcher-Watson R.I., R.B.A. as its President and driving force. James believed passionately in passing on the pure watercolour tradition: “The great masters showed us the way and it is right that we should follow in their footsteps, not copying but receiving inspiration from them. My aim is to carry on the torch, encouraging today’s painters to express the beauty of the landscape simply and effectively.”

Following James’s death in 2004, David Curtis R.O.I., R.S.M.A. - one of Britain’s most successful artists - kindly agreed to become Patron of the PWS. International artist Robert Wade A.W.S. is an Honorary Member of the society, and most recently Trevor Chamberlain R.O.I., R.S.M.A. agreed to become an Honorary Member. These well respected artists support the PWS in its aims to provide opportunities for members and selected non-members to exhibit pure watercolours, as well as passing on skills and techniques to students of watercolour painting so that this exciting and challenging medium can be enjoyed and mastered by the next generation.

Peter Wileman's Devon Painting Trip

Peter has just returned from South Devon where he spent time sketching and gathering materials for a new series of paintings.

Peter writes: "A great week in Devon with superb superb weather was

kicked off with a morning spent sketching and exploring this fantastic

neck of the woods, followed by some oil sketches worked on during the

course of the week.

Glittering Night At The SWA Exhibition

The Lady Taverners Charity Night was a big success at the current SWA exhibitoion at London's mall Galleries. The evening was arranged to raise money for charity with an auction of works donated by members of the SWA including Jean Haines' horse racing picture (below).

It was a wonderful evening and celebrity guests included Nicholas Parsons,Robert Powell and Ainsley Harriot. Angela Rippon sat for a portrait during the event and Jeans reports it was a fantastic occasion.

The stars of our two fastest selling DVDs Jean Haines and Ann Blockley, both members of the Society of Women Artists, will be demonstrating at this years SWA 150th exhibition at London's Mall Galleries.

Ann is appearing on July 5 and Jean will be there on July 7. Both will be demonstrating from about 11 a.m. to 3.30 as well as signing copies of their latest books.

When In Rome...or Venice Come to That

Norfolk artist Brian Ryder AROI has been teaching people to paint for quite a few years as well as making DVDs with us and being a sucessful exhibiting artist.. His courses, run both in the UK and abroad by West Norfolk Arts are always in demand.

If you have never been on a painting holiday and wondered what went on, Brian has contributed the following diary from his most recent foray to Venice with a bunch of eager painters. The words and pictures are from Brian himself.

The weeks forecast was not too good, as twelve eager and non too eager attendees, having heard of my reputation on tuition, waited at Gatwick for our flight and a week of painting in Venice.

At least I knew quite a few of the group, but two ladies from Singapore threw me somewhat. One called Florence spoke fair English but the other with an unpronouncable name did not. I decided to refer to her as" Rome". Arrived late afternoon to sunshine and except for one rainy day, there it stayed all week. The Italians said "the weather forecast, it will be good, itza no problemo". The first day day after our arrival we stopped at the Giardini area for the morning to get their eye in and so I could assess the level of their work. Off to Ca Rezzonica and St Barnaba for the afternoon for a demo, cappuchinos and perspective tuition. All great so far.

Day 2. I was up early drawing from the cafe opposite the hotel before going for breakfast. Today we are off to Sant Angelo for the morning tuition and then to Santo Stephano after lunch. Most of the group working in pen and wash which is my preferred medium, if I have not the time to paint in oils. We now started with colour, having become more acclimatised to the surroundings and by mid afternoon I led my group past another art group onto The Accademia Bridge overlooking "the view" of the Grand Canal. "Ok find a space along the bridge and you have twenty minutes to draw "the view"....no time for detail....just go for it! I have done this before with students and the results are interesting to see what is actually achievable, no time for detail ... once the "you must be joking" reaction is forgotten.

I promised to do the same later after they had returned to the Hotel as I wanted an hour or two drawing /painting on my own before the evening meal. After a drawing of the Gondola repair yard I went back to the Accademia for my "twenty minutes". After ten minutes drawing a man nudged me... "Youre Brian Ryder arent You" I tried to pass myself off as Hazel Soan ...but that didnt work. " Iv'e got your DVDs". He then proceeded to talk about what he had been doing in Venice and his art career. I stopped the clock.... "I am just an amateur he said but I know or have been with many lesser known artists like Peter Wileman, Ken Howard, Trevor Chamberlain David Curtis etc, etc". I explained what I was doing with my group and he eventually wandered off enabling me to finish my drawing before meeting up for dinner.

Day 3. Up early again drawing well before 7am. Off to the Gondola repair yard for the morning tuition and a demo of the old mill on the Giudecca. After lunch went along the Zattere stopping for a drawing and painting finishing at The Dogana "Custom House" before the journey back to base.

Day 4. My Half day for tuition. We started on the Lido for morning session giving the group time for shopping or painting on their own before meeting up in the evening at San Marco. I took the opportunity to return to The Dogana to do my view from" Harrys bar to Doges Palace", a 300 metre strech of the San Marco waterfront. It was warm and sunny so stopping off for a coffee having met some of the group I had a quick g and t before metting two more of the group who dragged me off for another g and t before meeting at the restaurant for our evening meal. One of our most sedate ladies , I think it may have been the drinks earlier, much to the astonishment of the group, threw her dry bread roll over her shoulder into the hundreds walking down the narrow street behind her. This was returned some 10 minutes later..."Is this yours?. A choppy waterbus journey back late in the evening....weather on the change ?

Day 5. Today the rain came. Went to Pescheria "Fish Market". Being a Sunday we could get undercover as there were no stalls erected. I decided, after initial tuition to do a quick pen and wash with non waterproof ink to try to get some effect onto the sketch. A passerby commented how "nice" one of the groups work was, looked at me with a "never mind" look as I was just proceeding to hold my work out in the rain to get some effect! We adjourned for coffee and crit in the rear of a cafe before finishing the morning and a pizza in the nearest cafe. On to San Marco for afternoon....still raining so group split up and I "sketched" with ideas for an oil or two back home of the large crowd still waiting to get into San Marco Basilica.

Day 6. Last full painting day and off to Camo Nuovo and S. Miracoli in the morning, a favourite spot of mine for last round of tuition, and to Santi Giovanni e Paolo after lunch before wandering back through Venice to San Marco and Waterbus. I am always surprised how much work people actually do as I believe it should not all be too serious and time out is a must in Venice. Observation, not always with painting , to pull in the atmoshere of the place is essential if you want to work on the drawings and paintings with an oil or two back at home. Memories of a good time and getting the feel and atmosphere of the location as well as photographic back ups is essential.

Day 7. The water taxi to the airport was not till mid afternoon so many of us, not a tuition day, either went shopping or back into Venice for last minute drawings and photos. I ended up at Giardini for photos of the residential area....with washing... and walked all the way back to San Marco taking photos I wanted, perhaps using these on some oils in the future. Then its home arriving before midnight.

Another great trip. I managed to get up early every morning to draw something as I dont have much time otherwise. Its probably nearing ten visits I have now had to Venice. I never tire of the place, but the beauty is that although many of the locations, if not all, have been painted many times by far better artists than I will ever be, the magic is still there. If you ever want to paint at one place in your life.....Venice it has to be. Don’t worry it’s been done before...it will be done many times again....but you have been and painted it !

Post note. Unlike previous trips abroad with me all the group got home safely.....without injuries !.... and thanks to everyone in the group in making it a week to remember.

Ann Blockley On Front Cover of The Artist Magazine

Ann, who has her new DVD with us and her new book out this month as well as a one woman exhibition is on the front Cover of the new edition of The Artist Magazine - out now. Inside is a hugely informative article on her experimental approach to flower painting.

Ann has just come back from the Patchings Art Festival where she was a huge hit demonstrating in the big marquee.

The magazine article features some pictures from her book which are also to be featured in her forthcoming major one woman show. The exhibition features a large number of paintings, including many from Ann's new book and dvd, 'Experimental Flowers in Watercolour' alongside landscapes and woodland subjects. Some of the paintings have been created with intricate layers of mixed media and others are loose watercolours using Ann’s unique and unusual painting methods.

The exhibition is to be held in a superb 16th century tithe barn gallery. The fantastic venue has award winning gardens and tea rooms which will be open all week to celebrate the exhibition of flower paintings and create a special day out. The gallery is in the centre of a glorious part of the Cotswolds with many gardens, antique shops and scenic walks.

Her new dvd from us, also called ’Experimental Flowers in Watercolour’, will be shown throughout the exhibition. Readers of our blog may remember I reported the sad death of Graham Lowe recently. Graham designed and made the Firth Painting Frame that holds your watercolour paper firmly without the use of tape or clips.

We have decided not to look for somone else to carry on making them as they were very much Graham's project so when stocks are gone they are gone. In fact we have just nine quarter imperial frames left.

The Firth Painting Frame is a similar design to the one used by the late Edward Wesson and is the actual frame used by Dr Robin Macdonald on his DVD - Confidence In Watercolour. It is made of two hinged sheets of wood (MDF is used to keep the weight down) that hold the paper securely and gives an attractive white deckle- edged border to your paintings. The frame fastens shut with velcro tabs. Saves all that time sticking paper down with tape. Hold paper securely in a breeze. Hand made in Essex. Light weight - weights only 1lb 7 oz (0.66kg). Designed to hold a quarter imperial sheet of watercolour paper. Price of £23.90 includes p&p. Regretabbly these frames can only be supplied to customers in the UK due to the exhorbitant cost of shipping overseas. That costs more than the frames do!

Jean Haines, Tom Jones And A Day At The Races

Jean Haines is involved in a wonderful art sale at the Mall Galleries next month as part of the Society of Women Artists exhibition. The sale is orgnaised by the Lady Taverners to raise money for children's charities.
Here's what Jean herself says about the event:

"On June 30th there is going to be a fantastic evening at the Mall Galleries which will be held during the 150th Exhibition by the SWA. Surrounded by amazing art a unique auction will be taking place which involves original art generously donated by SWA members themed with prizes that are truly wonderful. For example my painting " Flying Colours" will be part of an auction lot which will include a fabulous day to remember at Newmarket Races followed by a concert with two tickets to see Tom Jones!

During the evening there will be two fabulous portraits taking place live. Celebrity Angela Rippon the new President of the Lady Taverners will be sitting for one painting whilst a sculpture of the sponsor of the event will also take place. Both of these by renowned artists.

There will be champagne and canapes throughout the event and tickets are surprisingly only £20 each.

All funds raised from this evening will be going towards the Lady Taverners which provides amazing support for some very special children."

End of An Era

I am very sad to announce that the man who makes our Firth watercolour painting frames, Graham Lowe, has died today. Graham was 83 and had been ill for some time. He was an astonishingly active man working right up until his recent illness. He took pride in making sure each Firth painting frame was just perfect. They were all hand made by Graham in his Essex workshop. He was a gentle, kind man who will be missed by all those who knew him. Our condolences to his wife Mary and his three chidren.

June Mendoza - Portrait Painter To The Stars

There are few people I know with as much energy as portrait painter June Mendoza.

This is what she is currently up to:

" I am doing a whole wall for the Royal Hospital Chelsea. There will be at least 50 same size canvases in oils of the, mostly, heads of the Pensioners,---- 5 rows of 10 I go there about once a week and have finished about 35.

Have very recently finished Dr David Starkey; opera singer Felicity Palmer in my ongoing series of musicians; Valerie Grove, the author/journalist. These latter three will be in Royal Soc. of Portrait Painters annual in May.

I am currently painting the head of the Inst. of Psychiatry, King's College, Prof. Robin Murray and a conversation piece of David Mellor Q.C and Lady Cobham.

I am also painting Lord Stewartby [ in tartan trews ] ,Peregrine Massey full length in costume, with sword, as High Sherrif of Kent"

It makes me feel tired just rteading about it. And the amazing thing about JUne is ashje has been at the top of her profession for an amazingly long time. Doing some research the other day I cam accross a film reporty from the old Pathe News featuring Jiune painting the portrait of 60's singer and actress Anita Harris. This is a lovely period piece and worth you viewing. You may have to sit though a short advert first but that's the price we pay for a free to view archive. Anita starts up doing some excercises on a device that was considered high tech in 1966 when this was filmed. Then she does a bit of Judo (like you do) before trolling off to June's studio to have her portrait painted. Delightful. It's hip and goovey and I like it!

Jean is delighted delighted that she has just heard she has been selected to exhibit in the David Shepherd Wild life Artist of the Year 2011 Exhibition at the Mall Galleries,London in June. Below is her picture of " Almost There " the painting that she submitted which has special meaning for her. It was in her first book " How to Paint Colour and Light in Watercolour" As Jean says: " It is called " Almost There" and represents what our grandchildrens' children may be seeing in the future of the disappearing wildlife as we know it today minus help. "

Come and Watch The Masters at Work

The next ROI Masterclass, featuring two of our artists, is to be held on Sunday March 20 and promises to be the best ever. The location is the splendid Picturecraft Gallery in Holt in Norfolk which is being specially opened for the day for us. There will be three members demonstrating on the day. You can get as close as you lilke to the painting action and ask as many questions about technique and materials as you wish.
David Curtis ROI, RSMA is back for his second ROI Masterclass. David does very little teaching these days so this is a rare opportunity to watch him in action.

Watercolours By John Hoar

Since I posted some images from John's Help The Heroes exhibition before Christrmas we have had many requests to see more of John's work - inlcuding a heartfelt plea from John in Sweden. So in answer to those requests here are the full set that John sent me including sme stunning pieces painted in sepia. Fans of John will be delighted to hear that we are filming with him again in September and again. listening to our customers , that DVD will feature John demonstating his brilliant use of line and wash. It will be filmed in one of his favoutitre painting locations, the Suffolk wool towns - places like Lavenham - which will allow him to demonstrate his style to full effect.

Rare Film Of The Great Edward Seago

One of our best selling films of 2010 was the one we made with Suffolk artist Miles Fairhurst demonstrating the oil painting techniques of Edward Seago (1910-1974). Seago who was born and lived in Norfolk has probably had a greater influence on popular English landscape painting than any other artist of the past 50 years. Sadly he died in 1974 - long before painting DVDs or videos were really being made and I have never seen any film of him actually painting. But I have just came accross a lovely short film from Pathé News showing him in action in the early 1930's. A rare gem. You can view below. You have to sit through a brief commercial first but that's the price we pay for free acess to this wonderful archive. Called Impressions in Oil it runs to one hour 45 minutes. It was filmed in James's Cambridge studio and on location at Walberswick on the Suffolk coast where James goes to paint every summer.

Brian Ryder Elected to the ROI

I am delighted to say that one of our favourite artists, Brian Ryder, has been elected as an Associate Member of the Royal Institure of Oil Painting. Brian, who is based in the delightful North Norfolk coastal town of Wells Next The Sea, has spent the last year as provisional member of the ROI.

Here's some background on Brian:

Brian turned professional in 1993 to pursue a life in painting and teaching, following a long career in Architecture. The demands for his teaching skills grew and he has been teaching for 35 years, and running courses in Britain, together with painting holidays in many parts of Europe. Italy is his preference. In 2011 he will be returning to his favourite haunt in Venice.

Brian paints in most media, but all nearly always landscape based, sometimes abstracts but more impressionist and atmospheric oils being his choice approach, media and style of work, but often using pen and wash on location.

He has exhibited in many galleries in East Anglia, the Cotswolds and London where he held a one- man show of abstract landscapes in 2002. All four of his submitted oils were accepted from 2008 to 2010 for the R.O.I. exhibition at The Mall Gallery and he was then offered Provisional membership of the R.O.I. for 2010.

Brian has written a numberof books on painting and featured in several teaching DVDs. Here;'s the trailer for his latest.

Brians greatest love is his oil painting and is over the moon with his achievement with the R.O.I. and feels this association with them is the greatest achievement he has had since his first “real” oil painting some 45 years ago. Originally from North London Brian now lives in Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk. Here are some examples of his recent work.

I am delighteds to anounce our next new release - which should be out by Feb 4 features well known painter James Horton President of the Royal Society of British Artists.

James is a wonderfully delicate painter and is the author of nine books on painting - so if you are a keen artist, the oidds are you have read some of his wise words of instruction before. The DVD was filmed in his Cambridge studio and on location at Walberswick on the Suffolk coast where James spends every summer painting - something he has done for the last 20 years.

The studio paintings he completes feature two of his other favourite and regularly visited locations - India and Tuscany. Here's how his India picture took shape.

Another Award for Adebanji Alade

Adebanji finished his year in style by picking up the Painting Plein Air Plus Award 2010 as part of the Making a Mark Awards. Having filmed with him a few months ago I can confirm this man's energy and dedication to plein air painting!

Here's what he writes on his own blog:

I'm so happy to end the year with an Award that I really cherish. Earlier this year I won the Chelsea Riverside Competition, organised by Heatherley's School of Fine Art, Chelsea and The Cheyne walk Trust- The whole exhibition was put in place to raise funds for the Schools Bursary Award Scheme. I also won the prize for the Best London Scene at the Chelsea Art Society's 100th Annual exhibition- This Award is donated annually and it's called The Agnes Reeve Memorial for a painting of London. To end the year I got an Award called The Painting Plein Air Plus Award- by MAKING A MARK-This award is for excellence in plein air painting plus a strong commitment to sharing information. I was nominated for this award by Sheona Hamilton Grant, who said, "I would like to recommend Adebanji Alade for the Painting Plein Air Plus Award. His talent, enthusiasm and sustained sharing are brilliant. Where Did He Get That Paint Box?

This is the familar cry of many of our customers who have borught DVDs from us featuring Charles Reid, Steve Hall, John Hoar, Robert Brindley or Dr Robin Macdonald. What they are referring to is the all metal hand-made paint box they all use and which gets so many admiring looks. I have had so many enquitries I thought it would be helpful top place this information in the public domain.
They all use the same box made by the very talented Craign Young.

It really is a thing of beauty and is hand made by Craig in his workshop in Ludlow, Shropshire. It's fashioned from brass and is hand enamled. It is built like a tank - or rather I should say, like a Rolls Royce, and will last you a lifetime. There is nothing else quite like it on the market currently which is why it is the choice of so many profesional watercolour artists. Two pointrs of caution. Firstly Craig cannot make enough to satisfy demand so there is always a waiting list which seems to vary between three and nine months. Secondly they are not exactly cheap. But quality does come at a price. Craig does a number of different designs I own three of them! I always say to people it is best to order the thing, pay the deposit and then forget about it for a few months. When it arrives it is a wonderful surprise. Beat The VAT Increase

There are less than two weeks left before VAT goes up to 20% when we shall regretfully have to increase our prices. It does however mean that you have got until mindnight on Jan 3 to order at current prices. We will be dealing with internet orders right over the Christmas period and the only days our phones will not be manned are Dec 25 and 26. Any order placed on line or by phone before midnight on Jan 3 will be at the current prices.

We have already lined up a number of exciting projects to film in 2011 and I will be posting some details of these before the year ends.

Mad, Wonderful Painting Project in Bath

There's mad ideas and then there's mad ideas. Perhaps the maddest I have heard of from an artist for some time was Adebanji Alade's wheeze to paint 500 pictures of the city of Bath in a year. Well there were plenty who thought he would never do it but just to prove them wrong he currebntly has a one man exhibition in The Bath Gallery of the first 211 paintings!!!! Only 289 to go Adebanji!!!!

Adebanji is a past winner in thre Bath Prize awards designed to promote plein air painting and this year was on the judging panel - hence his link with Bath.

ROI EXHIBITION AT ITS BRILLIANT BEST

I spent yesterday at the 123rd annual ROI exhibition in the company of several of our arists who are mmebers. And what a brilliant exhibiton it is I do urge you to go and have a look yourself. It runs from Dec 8 to Sunday Dec 18 at London's Mall Galleries and 260 stunning pictures are on display.

Steve Hall's Teaching Programme for 2011

Steve Hall is one of our busiest teaching artists and he has just finalised his programme for 2011. There are a wide range of workshops from intensive weekly sessions in his own studio to courses on the North Norfolk coast and even Tuscany. He has published all his courses in a free brochure. Gastronomic Legend to Open ROI Exhibition

His food may be a work of art but Antonio Carluccio, the godfather of Italian cuisine in London is also passionate about painting and has just been appointed a patron of one of Britain’s oldest art societies - The Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Antonio who has been awarded the Commendatore OMRI by the President of Italy for services to Italian gastronomy, the equivalent of a British knighthood. was awarded also an honorary OBE in the UK. On Tuesday December 7 He will officially open the ROI’s annual exhibition at London’s Mall Galleries. Antonio, himself a keen painter, last year had his portrait painted by more than 50 artists simultaneously at the ROI’s Art Event evening.

ROI President Peter Wileman commented: “Food and painting have always gone together. A good meal stimulates the visual senses as well as the taste buds and that’s why I’m not surprised that Antonio is no mean artist himself. We are delighted to welcome him as a patron”. Carluccio joins former government minster Michael Portillo and actress Maureen Lipman as patrons of the ROI. The ROI’s 123^rd annual exhibition featuring more than 260 paintings is open to the public from December 8 -19. At the Mall Galleries, The Mall near Trafalgar Square. The ROI is the only major art society dedicated to oil painting. The Royal Institute of Oil Painters, was founded in 1882, and was granted royal status by King Edward VII in 1909.

Famous artists of the past who have shown their work in ROI exhibitions in the past include such as Alma Tadema, Macwhirter, Walter Sickert, Dame Laura Knight, Fantin Latour, Adrian Hill, Ann Redpath and even Rodin.
